Comic books. Everyone’s read them at some point. Since its first appearance in the United States in 1933, the comic book has been a key component of American society, introducing breathtaking visuals, intense stories and memorable characters to readers everywhere. However, in recent years, another type of comic book has become immensely popular. That comic is called manga. Manga encompasses all comics from Japan. While American comics typically depict more realistic, designated drawings, Japanese manga is more stylized. Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the past ten years, you’ve probably seen a Manga category near the Comic Books section of your local bookstore. The whole story can be found at http://www.macstories.net/stories/reading-manga-on-the-retina-ipad/

Manga has both distinctive creative and presentation differences from its American counterpart. While most American comic books consist of about 30-50 pages displayed in full color, manga is printed in black and white and can run hundreds of pages in length. Since Japanese is read from top to bottom, right to left, most English translations of manga are presented in the same fashion, in order to give the audience an authentic reading experience. If you’ve never read manga before, it does take a little while to get used to.

When most people think of American comic books, they associate them with superheroes, even though there’s a good amount that encapsulate other genres as well. As a result, the majority of comic book readers range from males 18-35. Manga has a much more diverse audience because of its tendency to gravitate toward any number of stories that appeal to both older and younger audiences as well as females, including psychological, action, comedy, and romance plots. Some manga move more slowly and dramatically, while others are fast-paced and full of intense scenes. Because of this, manga has achieved something American comics never accomplished: attracting vast numbers of both male and female readers.

If you’ve never read manga before, look at some reviews online, go to your local bookstore, and start reading something you’re intrigued by. You may discover a whole new world in manga!

I wish when I was young I had the foresight to know that some of the comic books in my stacks and stacks would be valuable someday! They got ripped, tossed around, given away and worst of all … thrown in the trash! Most of my comic books however are not in the list of most valuable, since I was born in 1941 and majority of mine were in the 1950s. My choices were more along the lines of Archie & Veronica and Little Lulu instead of action heroes too, so that makes me feel better that I didn’t actually dispose of a million dollar comic!

According to the NY Daily News these are the 10 most collectible and valuable comic books today:

1. Amazing Fantasy, No. 15 Value: $280,000
2. Flash Comics, No. 1 Value: $289,000
3. More Fun Comics, No. 52 Value: $316,000
4. Batman, No. 1 Value: $359,000
5. Marvel Comics, No. 1 Value: $367,000
6. Detective Comics, No. 1 Value: $405,000
7. All-American Comics, No. 16 Value: $430,000
8. Superman, No. 1 Value: $671,000
9. Detective Comics, No. 27 Value: $1,380,000
10. Action Comics, No. 1 Value: $1,500,000 –this comic debuted Superman to the world in 1938. I wasn’t born yet, but my brother was 4. Oh, Bro I wish you had this one and had saved it.

While comic book festivals are not for everyone, those who attend them are die hard fans of their chosen comic and enjoy bonding with other like minded people. It is a culture in itself but sometimes finding these festivals, often called conventions, can be difficult.

The San Diego ComicCon (short for Comic Book Convention) is an annual event held in Southern California. It is by far the most popular and most highly publicized comic book event in the nation. Some fans complain that it is even becoming too mainstream as it has become trendy for large companies and movie trailers to be previewed there instead of the main focus being on comic books.

For those fans, MegaCon (short for Mega Convention) is the right choice. Held in Florida every year, it prides itself on being true to the genre while still providing many attractions to fans including video game debuts and some anime and manga content. Is is the largest convention in the south east, and is quickly becoming larger.

The Southern Maryland ComicCon is a smaller, strictly comic book convention. Many of the dealers are collectible dealers, and local comic book shops. It has the appeal that those who enjoyed the San Diego ComicCon in its early years enjoyed, which is a feeling of a tightly knitted community of fans.

Depending on your preferences, one of these comic book conventions will be just right for you.The hits keep comin’: Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope Trailer [Video]
